Bolton Wanderers win 9-8 on penalties
A drab and largely uneventful ninety minutes was followed by a tense quarter of an hour as Bolton Wanderers edged a lengthy penalty shootout to take all three points at Moss Lane. The Reds were left with the consolation of one point for their efforts and the knowledge that they were comfortably the better side, but will be rueing a lacklustre attacking performance that saw few chances created and the handful that were go begging.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reserve side continued their impressive recovery from the opening day defeat to Wigan with a third win on the bounce, this one a resounding 3-0 defeat of their table-topping local rivals at Ewen Fields. Goals from Tom Cleverley, Darron Gibson (from a penalty conceded by City’s Shaleum Logan, who was subsequently red-carded) and the fit-again Rodrigo Possebon were enough to inflict a first defeat of the campaign on City after a niggly ninety minutes.

A rare moment of real quality from Wigan’s Irish forward Craig Mahon in the final minute of an otherwise scrappy match condemned Ole Solskjaer to a first defeat as reserves manager just minutes after David Gray’s headed equaliser seemed to have preserved the Norwegian’s unbeaten record. Matty Hampson had earlier given the Latics the lead just after the interval in a match that saw both sides hampered by the near-torrential Northwich rain.
