Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reserve side continued their impressive recovery from the opening day defeat to Wigan with a third win on the bounce, this one a resounding 3-0 defeat of their table-topping local rivals at Ewen Fields. Goals from Tom Cleverley, Darron Gibson (from a penalty conceded by City’s Shaleum Logan, who was subsequently red-carded) and the fit-again Rodrigo Possebon were enough to inflict a first defeat of the campaign on City after a niggly ninety minutes.

Matty Hampson had earlier given the Latics the lead just after the interval in a match that saw both sides hampered by the near-torrential Northwich rain.
