Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reserve side were left rueing the ineptitude of the officials and their own profligacy in front of goal as defeat – via a penalty shoot-out – to arch-rivals Liverpool at Moss Lane ended their hopes of a third successive Lancashire Senior Cup triumph.
Behind at the break through Nathan Eccleston’s well-taken (if a little fortuitous) strike, the Reds had nevertheless controlled the game and eventually got themselves level thanks to a terrific freekick from substitute Zoran Tošić. United’s Serbian winger was then clearly felled in the box, but instead of having a chance to win the tie with one well-earned spot-kick in normal time, the reigning champs had to endure the lottery of a shoot-out, where Liverpool ‘keeper Dean Bouzanis was the hero with decisive saves from Matt James and Ritchie de Laet.

Wow! Yet again it is reported that Manchester United lost because of poor referee decisions.
Do any of United’s teams ever lose because they simply weren’t good enough to beat the opposition on the day?
Do we always have to hear of poor referee decisions?

MikeMan – feel free to check any number of reports on this site on games we have lost. Pretty sure you’ll find we’re more than willing to offer due credit and hold our hands up when beaten fair and square by the better side, including in previous games against Liverpool.

class freekick by Tosic!! it just raced away…and in the dying minuted it was a clear penalty for the foul on Tosic…dead clear… what the hell was that linesman thinking…not much of a first half for United but in the second they created attack after attack…

Anyone else over the last 3 games get the feeling Refs are now engaged in some sort of misguided attempt to ‘teach’ us a lesson after nasty Sir Alex called Fatty Wiley a nasty horrible hurtful name that made him want to quit and go home bless him. Biggest over-reaction and witch hunt i have ever witnessed in football.

Unbelievably no cards shown by the ref in the game. Not sure on his fitness either.
Macheda looked interested for once, and Corry Evans was excellent throughout.

Not his best game, missed a couple of presentable chances. Worked hard though, still caused problems with his direct running and won the freekick we equalised from.
